A Harrogate-based initiative to promote sustainability and reduce carbon emissions has been shortlisted for national funding.
The Car Free Fridays campaign, run by local charity Zero Carbon Harrogate (ZCH), encourages residents to choose walking, cycling, scooting or public transport every Friday.
And as a result of its success, the initiative has been shortlisted for funding by the LNER Customer and Community Investment Fund (CCIF).
Zero Carbon Harrogate has been engaging schools and said it would “love to continue building up this network” by extending Car Free Fridays to the business community too.
While the primary goal is to cut transport emissions, other benefits include cleaner air, safer and quieter streets, and a boost for mental and physical health.
Sunita Soundur, Climate Action Coordinator at Zero Carbon Harrogate, said:
"Car Free Fridays is an essential step to address climate issues locally.
"In our area, one of the main sources of our emissions comes from transport... but the impact of this campaign goes far beyond this; through building healthier lifestyles and creating more pleasant environments for people to enjoy.
“Winning this funding will enable us to reach more people and create lasting change, one Friday at a time."
How you can help
Zero Carbon Harrogate is calling on residents, supporters, businesses and neighbours to vote for Car Free Fridays to win the funding here.
Voting closes on 19th November at 11:59pm.
A spokesperson for Zero Carbon Harrogate said:
“The LNER CCIF funding is highly competitive, so every vote counts; it only takes a minute, but the impact of your support could be felt for years to come!”
Zero Carbon Harrogate is a registered charity dedicated to making Harrogate District a net zero carbon community by 2030.
