Former Ripon mayor launches 29-mile charity run ahead of 70th birthday

Stuart Martin alongside friend and 'gym buddy' Karyn Feingold.

A Ripon community leader is preparing to run nearly 30 miles between two historic landmarks as part of a personal fundraising challenge.

Stuart Martin, chair of trustees at Ripon Community House, will run from Ripon Cathedral to York Minster on 25th July in a self-organised 29-mile route he's named “Minster 2 Minster”.

The challenge comes ahead of his 70th birthday in August and is part of a long-term personal goal that is a decade in the making.

He said:

“At the age of 60, I was inspired by witnessing an 80-year-old man complete his first half marathon.

"Motivated by his determination, I began my own running journey with the Couch to 5K program.

"The following year, I proudly completed the Great North Run. Crossing that finish line, I made a promise to myself: by the time I turn 70, I want to run a full marathon.”

With no suitable marathon event available, Stuart and a friend chose to create their own route linking the two cathedral cities.

He said:

“With my 70th birthday approaching on 8th August, time is moving quickly.

"A good friend and gym buddy Karyn Feingold stepped in with support and commitment to help me achieve this goal.

"Unable to find a suitable marathon event for both of us, we decided to create our own challenge: running from Ripon Cathedral to York Minster – a remarkable 29-mile journey known as Minster 2 Minster on 25th July.”

The run is aimed at raising funds for Ripon Community House, which provides facilities and support for local groups and services.

Stuart said:

“I am raising funds for Ripon Community House, a vital local charity that provides room hire, classes, and support for community groups and services.

"This organisation is truly at the heart of Ripon, fostering connection and helping our community thrive.”

He is aiming to raise £700 through donations - £100 for every 10 years of his life.

He said:

"Every donation brings us closer to that goal and helps ensure Ripon Community House continues its invaluable work.

“Please join me in making a difference by supporting this cause as I take on this personal marathon challenge on 25 July 2026.

"Together we can help strengthen our community while celebrating perseverance and commitment.”
