A business group in Knaresborough is urging people to still visit the town this weekend despite the cancellation of its Christmas market.
The market is unable to go ahead due to 50mph winds in the forecast from Storm Darragh and a yellow weather warning.
But Knaresborough’s Chamber of Trade is still asking visitors to go ahead with their planned visit to support local businesses.
Shops, pubs, bars, restaurants, cafes and other venues have invested in extra produce to accommodate the expected footfall from the market.
Kelly Young of Kelly Teggin Hair, who is also a Director of Knaresborough Chamber of Trade, said:
“Lots of businesses have invested in lots of food, drink and alcohol, and there are lots of other events going on.
“We hope people that were intending to come into Knaresborough will still come to eat and drink.
“There’s lots of amazing things on menus, so we hope people will put their big coats and hoods up and come and eat, drink and be merry.”
Speaking about the cancellation, Kelly said:
“We’re absolutely devastated. It was very difficult because the weather warnings were getting worse and worse.
“Knaresborough Marketplace is like a wind tunnel, and if we put the stalls up and something happened, it’s extremely dangerous.
“We had no option really but there’s so much other stuff going on in Knaresborough over the weekend.”
The town is hosting its Christmas Tree Festival, as well as a smaller Christmas Artisan Market at the church on Gracious Street.
Knaresborough Town Council has confirmed Knaresborough Christmas Market will now take place next weekend (14th/15th December).
