Asian hornet alert issued after sighting in Ripon

Yellow-legged Asian hornets have been spotted in Ripon, prompting a warning for residents to stay vigilant.

The Yorkshire Beekeepers Association (YBKA) said the sighting was backed up with a photograph and has already been referred to the National Bee Unit (NBU).

The organisation is urging people in and around Ripon to keep an eye out for the invasive species over the coming weeks.

A spokesperson for the association said:

“Seen one? Don't approach it. Report it through the Asian Hornet Watch app.

"A photo makes a real difference if you can safely grab one.”

Yellow-legged Asian hornets are smaller than the UK's native European hornet.

They have a dark body with a single yellow band and distinctive yellow legs, which give them their name.

They are known to prey on honeybees and can often be seen hovering near hive entrances, catching returning bees.

The Yorkshire Beekeepers Association said the National Bee Unit has acted quickly following the report and have deployed live catch traps.
