Wetherby man takes on Sahara Desert in memory of 'inspirational' daughter

Mark Normington is raising money in memory of his daughter Leila.

A Wetherby dad is preparing to cross the Sahara Desert in a fundraising trek inspired by the life of his young daughter.

Mark Normington will take part in the Sahara Trek 2026, a 50km challenge across sand dunes and ancient riverbeds, raising money for Meningitis Now.

The trek, the charity’s first overseas challenge since 2016, will see a group of supporters travel through one of the world’s largest deserts, facing temperatures of up to 35°C.

Participants will be guided by local Berbers, camping under the stars as they follow historic routes across the landscape.

Mark is undertaking the challenge in memory of his daughter Leila, who died in July 2023 from bacterial meningitis aged two, after contracting two different strains of the disease within a fortnight.

Leila was born in October 2020 during the Covid pandemic and was later diagnosed as profoundly deaf. After receiving bilateral cochlear implants, her family say she thrived, showing resilience and determination despite difficulties with balance and frequent falls.

Following a bout of pneumonia in early 2023, she was unwell on and off before her sudden death later that summer.

Speaking about his decision to take on the trek, Mark said:

"Leila's passing has left a hole in the hearts of everyone who loved her, but her story continues to inspire action.

"By sharing Leila’s journey, we hope to raise awareness of meningitis, encourage early recognition of symptoms, and remind people to trust their instincts when it comes to their health and the health of their loved ones.

"We also aim to highlight the importance of follow-up care for children and adults who remain unwell after treatment."

Funds raised will support research, awareness campaigns and services for families affected by meningitis.

Mark said the challenge is well outside his comfort zone but believes turning loss into action is an important way to honour his daughter’s legacy.

Training for the trek is already under way, with the Sahara challenge scheduled for March 2026.

Mark has so far raised £4,000 of his £5,000 target. To find out more and to support his campaign, find Mark's JustGiving page here.
