The Jack Laugher Leisure and Wellness Centre in Ripon is set to fully reopen on Monday, September 8, following a £23 million programme of structural works and refurbishments.
The work involved extensive ground stabilisation after a void was discovered beneath the site in 2019.
According to the council, the work was necessary due to Ripon’s underlying gypsum geology, which can cause underground cavities and subsidence.
The reopening will see:
- the refurbished lower ground floor come back into use
- a cycling studio
- two group exercise studios
- a sports hall
- new changing rooms
- a meeting room
A full programme of fitness classes will also return to the centre, with sessions previously held at Hugh Ripley Hall moving back on site.
The redevelopment has been ongoing for several years, with gym facilities temporarily housed in a cabin in the car park during the stabilisation works.
Earlier this year, most gym equipment was returned to the main building.
The centre, part of the countywide Active North Yorkshire network, is named after Olympic gold medallist and Ripon native Jack Laugher.
It provides fitness and wellness opportunities for residents of all ages and abilities.
