Harrogate MP's bake sale raises £300 for cancer charity

Tom Gordon MP hosted a charity bake sale for Yorkshire Cancer Research.

Harrogate and Knaresborough MP Tom Gordon has raised over £300 for a charity celebrating its 100th anniversary.

The Liberal Democrat MP’s charitable sale was part of Yorkshire Cancer Research’s Yorkshire’s Big Birthday Brew campaign, which encourages people across the region to host tea parties during Afternoon Tea Week (11th–17th August) in support of the charity.

All funds raised will go towards cutting-edge research aimed at improving early diagnosis and treatment for people living with cancer in Yorkshire and beyond.

Tom, a long-time supporter of Yorkshire Cancer Research, praised the fantastic turnout and the generosity of the local community.

He said:

“Yorkshire faces some of the highest cancer incidence and mortality rates in England, and that has to change. Yorkshire Cancer Research is leading the way with vital research, earlier diagnosis, and improved access to care.

“For 100 years, this charity has made a profound difference to people’s lives across our region.

"I’m proud to support their work – both in Parliament and right here in our community.

“The bake sale was a fantastic success – a great way to bring people together, celebrate a century of progress, and raise important funds. I want to thank everyone who came along and contributed.”

Dr Kathryn Scott, Chief Executive at Yorkshire Cancer Research added:

“A big thank you to Tom Gordon for hosting a Yorkshire Big Brew to support life-saving cancer research in Yorkshire and for raising awareness of the charity’s work in its 100th year.

“Yorkshire is one of the regions hit hardest by cancer, and every 17 minutes, someone is diagnosed.

“The funds raised from Tom’s Big Brew will help the charity find new and innovative ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, so more people in Yorkshire can live longer, healthier, cancer-free lives.

“Yorkshire’s Big Brew is all about bringing people together over something simple and comforting - a good cup of tea. Every cuppa will help make a difference to those affected by cancer in our region and beyond.”
