The Langdale Moor fire has now been burning for seven days, with North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service confirming crews remain at the scene.
As of 9:15am today (Monday 18th August), five fire engines and specialist argocats were still in use tackling the blaze, which was first reported on the evening of Monday 11th August.
It was declared a major incident two days later after spreading across around 5 sq km.
Over the weekend, fire crews were supported by neighbouring services, partner agencies, farmers, local businesses and members of the public, who donated supplies.
A helicopter and specialist appliances were also deployed to help with water supplies.
Chief Fire Officer Jonathan Dyson said:
“Our crews, control room staff and officers, have worked around the clock this past week to tackle the moorland fire at Langdale. It’s been especially hot and tiring work for the crews and officers at the scene.
“The generosity of communities and businesses through donations, support and well wishes has been truly outstanding.
“I’m especially grateful to local farmers, gamekeepers and partner agencies who’ve assisted on the ground and to our neighbouring fire services for providing additional resources.”
The scale of the operation meant Harrogate Fire Station had to cancel its planned open day on Saturday, as local crews were needed at the incident.
The cause of the fire is not yet known, and crews are expected to remain on site for some time.
