Six Rotary clubs in North Yorkshire have worked together to fund the delivery of vital medical equipment to Ukraine.
The shipment, recently dispatched by PhysioNet, consisted of 60 hospital beds, 24 mattresses and a further 153 medical items.
The equipment was sent to YANA (You Are Not Alone), an organisation supporting healthcare services in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine.
The participating Rotary clubs - Rotary Club of Harrogate, The Rotary Club of Knaresborough, Rotary Northallerton Mowbray, Thirsk Rotary, Wetherby Wharfedale and Wensleydale Rotary - together with matched funding from the Rotary Foundation, covered the full cost of transportation.
PhysioNet is a UK charity based in North Yorkshire that collects surplus disability, mobility and medical equipment and refurbishes it before delivering it to those in need around the world.
Since the outbreak of the war in 2022, PhysioNet has sent the equivalent of 33 shipping containers to Ukraine.
Peter Thompson MBE, founder of PhysioNet, said:
“Unlike our usual projects, where recipients cover the transport costs, shipments to Ukraine are fully self-funded at around £5,000 per lorry.
“Support such as we have received from local Rotary clubs is essential if we are to continue sending much-needed equipment to Ukraine.”
To date, more than 17,100 items - enough to equip at least three hospitals - have been shipped from the charity’s depots in North Yorkshire, Cambridge and Bristol.
