Ensuring that every child wakes up to a gift on Christmas Day remains the aim of an annual countywide toy appeal.
In its seventh year, the Reuse Santa campaign encourages residents to donate pre-loved toys, games, books, and puzzles in a good condition.
The appeal is run by the Yorwaste waste management company in partnership with North Yorkshire Council and City of York Council.
From November 15 to 30, donations will be accepted at all household waste recycling centres. All items must be clean, complete, and in working order.
Last year, 5,000 items, or 30 van-loads, were donated for children and teenagers who might not otherwise receive a gift at Christmas.
North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for waste services, Cllr Richard Foster, said:
“Every year, the kind donations from residents ensure that hundreds of children wake up to a gift on Christmas Day who might not have done so.
“The continuing cost-of-living crisis means that many families are struggling, and there is more pressure on finances over the festive season.
“We are proud to run Reuse Santa to help relieve some of the burden. All we ask is that the gifts are in a condition that they would like to be received.
“The scheme also reaffirms our commitment to sustainability at a time when waste is at a yearly high. By reusing items, you are doing your bit to protect the environment.”
Toys powered by mains electric cannot be accepted. Site operatives at the recycling centres will be on hand to accept donations, as well as advise on recycling or disposing of items that are unsuitable.
The donated items will be sorted, cleaned and distributed to local organisations and charities including the council’s early help team, the British Heart Foundation, and the Daisy Chain Project.
North Yorkshire Council’s head of early help, Barbara Merrygold, said:
“In today’s world, we’re constantly encouraged to buy the latest gadgets and toys, often leaving perfectly good items unused and forgotten.
“This Christmas, we’re inviting people to give those items a second life by donating them to families who could really benefit.
“It’s a simple act that can bring joy to a child and ease the financial pressure many families face during the festive season.
“My team is proud to be part of this initiative, which not only supports our communities but also brings a sense of fulfilment to everyone involved in sharing these gifts.”
