A new campaign has been started to improve the visibility of road signs and markings in the Harrogate area.
Launched by local driving instructor Nicky Crebbin, the campaign is highlighting the dangers of overgrown trees and bushes blocking signs in the Harrogate district.
Nicky believes obstructions and poor road markings pose “significant hazards” to road users - and learners in particular.
The petition, which is aimed at North Yorkshire Council, has received more than 450 signatures.
Nicky said:
“Overgrown trees and bushes are increasingly blocking vital road signs, including speed limits, junction warnings, and directional signs.
“As residents of the area, many of us are involved in teaching new drivers, and we have observed how the lack of visible signage creates confusion and hesitation for learners, who rely heavily on clear guidance to develop their skills and navigate safely.
“This is also proving problematic during driving tests conducted out of Knaresborough Test Centre.
“When road signs are hidden from view, drivers may miss critical information, increasing the likelihood of accidents, fines, points and failed driving tests.”
The petition has been directed towards Harrogate and Knaresborough MP Tom Gordon and Councillor Keane Duncan, the council’s Executive Member for Highways and Transportation.
One person commented:
“My daughter is a learner driver at the moment and anything to make the roads safer is a bonus.”
Another added:
“It is a concern and a safety hazmats when driving they are hardly visible.
“My other concern is hedges and trees on corners of junctions where you can’t always see pedestrians.”
