Harrogate vet issues heat stroke warning

Claro Hill Vets are warning dog owners about heatstroke.

As the UK faces soaring summer temperatures, dog owners are being urged to take serious precautions to protect their pets from heat stroke.

Claro Hill Vets in Harrogate has issued an urgent warning reminding pet owners that walking dogs in the heat of the day can lead to burned paws and life-threatening heat stroke.

A spokesperson has urged owners to check pavement temperature:

“If you can’t keep your hand on the floor, you should not be walking your dog.”

Burned pads are just one danger — overheating can quickly turn deadly.

Owners are advised to avoid exercise during the hottest parts of the day and instead walk dogs early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are lower.

Importantly, missing a single walk will not harm your dog, but walking them in unsafe conditions could be fatal.

Claro Hill Vets have also listed the key symptoms of heat stroke in dogs:

Rapid breathing
Drooling or vomiting
Glassy eyes or signs of distress
Racing heart
Hot-to-touch body
Unsteady on their feet
Collapse
Blue or brick red gums
Seizures
Unconsciousness

These signs can appear quickly and require immediate action.

If you suspect your dog is suffering from heat stroke, Claro Hill Vets recommend the following first aid steps:

Move the dog to a cool, shaded area
Allow them to take small sips of water
Pour cool (not cold) water over the dog
Lie them on a cool mat or wet towel (but do not cover them with a wet towel, as this can trap heat)
Use fans at home or air conditioning in the car while travelling to the vet

With temperatures continuing to climb, dog owners are reminded that vigilance could save lives.

Avoid mid-day walks, monitor your pet closely, and know what to do in an emergency.

Your dog’s life may depend on it.
