A historic Harrogate church is set to mark the 100th anniversary of its first Mass next week.
St Joseph’s Church on Skipton Road, a cherished spiritual and community hub since 1925, is preparing to celebrate its centenary with a week of special events starting on Saturday 26th July.
The celebration will start with a Centenary Mass at 5:30pm, presided over by Bishop Marcus Stock, Bishop of Leeds.
Parishioners, past and present, along with members of the wider Harrogate community, are invited to attend.
Following the Mass, a social gathering in the parish hall will bring together generations of parishioners for "food, conversation and reflection."
The parish is organising a shared table, with attendees encouraged to bring food and help create a “festive, community spirit.”
Volunteers are also being sought for setup, serving, and cleanup.
One committee member said:
“This centenary is not just a milestone for the building but for the generations of people who have passed through its doors—seeking faith, comfort, friendship, and purpose.”
This Mass marks the start of Centenary Week, running from 26th July to 3rd August, during which various events will honour the church’s history and its evolving role in the local community.
St Joseph’s is also collecting historical memorabilia—photographs, stories, programs, and artefacts—from weddings, baptisms, First Communions, and other notable parish events.
These will be displayed during the Heritage Open Days in September (12th–21st September), when the church will open its doors to the public to share its rich history.
Memorabilia can be submitted digitally via email to patsyrochester10@gmail.com or dropped in the collection box in the church (please include contact details if submitting originals).
