Mother Shipton’s Cave has been named Small Visitor Attraction of the Year at the Visit York Tourism Awards 2026.
The awards ceremony was held on 12th March at York Racecourse and celebrated achievements across the tourism and hospitality sector in York and the surrounding area.
The category included several finalists, including Sledmere House and Gardens, Stump Cross Caverns and Woldies.
Judging included a mystery shopper visit, during which the attraction’s setting and presentation were highlighted.
The judge commented:
“The attraction takes its natural heritage and important history into account.
“The natural beauty of the walk, the river, the well and the caves is stunning, and the team work hard to highlight this.
“Every area of the attraction was well maintained, clean and tidy, and all the team members we spoke to were helpful and attentive – we felt very valued as customers.”
Located in Knaresborough, Mother Shipton’s Cave is known as the legendary birthplace of the Yorkshire prophetess Mother Shipton and is also home to the historic Petrifying Well.
“Visitors follow a wooded riverside path along the River Nidd to explore the cave, well and surrounding landscape.
Fiona Martin said the award was particularly meaningful as the attraction approaches a significant milestone.
“It’s wonderful to celebrate our ancient site as we look ahead to our 400th year in 2030.
“We’ve had an exciting period of change recently, including a new brand identity and the launch of our online shop, so receiving this award feels particularly special.
"As a multi-award-winning attraction, it’s fantastic to be recognised alongside so many brilliant businesses in the York area.”
