A local charity and athletics club has officially received The King's Award for Voluntary Service from the Lord-Lieutenant of the East Riding of Yorkshire.
Fitmums & Friends was presented with the award at a celebratory event held at Hull Guildhall on Saturday 12th July.
The Yorkshire-based charity, which has a group in Harrogate, supports people of all abilities to be more active and connected.
It was presented with the prestigious award crystal and certificate by Mr James Dick OBE, Lord-Lieutenant of the East Riding of Yorkshire, in recognition of the incredible work of the charity’s volunteers across the region.
Fitmums & Friends is one of just 281 charities, social enterprises and voluntary groups in the UK to receive the award in 2024 – the highest accolade given to local volunteer groups.
The King’s Award for Voluntary Service recognises outstanding work by volunteer groups to support their communities.
Sam Barlow BEM, Founder and Chief Officer of Fitmums & Friends, said:
“I am absolutely thrilled that Fitmums & Friends has been recognised with this incredible award.
“It is such an honour and a wonderful way of paying tribute to the commitment of our volunteers who help change people's lives by improving health and well-being through activity."
She added:
“The presentation event at Hull Guildhall was truly special – a joyful celebration of everything our amazing volunteers make possible.
“To be able to share the moment with around 150 of our dedicated volunteers, friends and supporters was incredibly moving and uplifting.
“It was a day filled with pride, connection and a deep sense of community – everything Fitmums & Friends stands for.”
Created in 2002 for the late Queen’s Golden Jubilee, The King’s Award for Voluntary Service has been continued by His Majesty The King.
2024 marked the second year of the award under its new name.
In addition to the Guildhall presentation, two volunteers from Fitmums & Friends also attended a garden party at Buckingham Palace in May 2025, alongside other recipients of this year’s Award.
