A Harrogate teacher is preparing to take on an ultramarathon this weekend in memory of a much-loved former colleague.
Jamie Wilson, Physics teacher at St Aidan’s High School, will run the Thames Path Ultra Challenge on Saturday and Sunday.
It’s a 100km (62-mile) route stretching along the River Thames.
Jamie is completing the event in tribute to his friend and former colleague Pete Edwards, who died earlier this year from a rare form of neuroendocrine cancer of the pancreas.
Pete, also a Physics teacher, passed away in February aged 63.
Colleagues have described him as a dedicated teacher with a passion for running, which he continued to enjoy throughout his life.
After attending his friend’s funeral, Jamie decided to take part in the same ultramarathon event that Pete had previously run.
Speaking ahead of the event, Mr Wilson said:
“Pete was an amazing man. He was a fantastic teacher, a true gentleman and an all round good human.
“I learned so much from him both in terms of physics and also how to be a good human being.
“He was gentle, kind and hardworking, always putting others above himself.
“He had a fantastic sense of humour and saw wonder in the world around him.”
Jamie has created a fundraising page to raise money for Neuroendocrine Cancer UK.
And it's already generated more than £2,000 in Pete's memory.
Jamie said:
“Pete dedicated decades of his life to working with children.
“He loved to run and was good at it, always humbling those who knew him with the distances he ran.
“He often joked that he only ran the distances to justify his appetite!
