Harrogate MP highlights importance of local museums in parliamentary debate

Tom Gordon at Knaresborough market square.

The MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough has highlighted the role of smaller museums during a recent parliamentary debate.

Tom Gordon spoke in a Westminster Hall debate on local museums, where he outlined the contribution they make to communities, heritage and local economies.

During the discussion, he pointed to examples across North Yorkshire, including the Royal Pump Room Museum and the Knaresborough Heritage Centre, describing them as organisations working to preserve the area’s history and identity.

He told the debate that smaller museums act as “community anchors”, helping to support civic pride while also attracting visitors and contributing to local high streets.

The comments form part of ongoing efforts to secure further investment in Knaresborough Castle, with the MP continuing to campaign for restoration work at the site.

Speaking afterwards, Mr Gordon said:

“Harrogate and Knaresborough’s rich heritage deserves to be protected.

"Our small museums play a huge role in preserving the stories and traditions that make Harrogate and Knaresborough unique.

“They need proper support from both central government and local authorities to continue their invaluable work.”

Kathy Allday from the Knaresborough Museum Association welcomed the comments, outlining the work carried out locally.

“Knaresborough Museum Association run not only the Heritage Centre and its museum gallery, also undertake research into Knaresborough’s history and deliver an extensive community outreach programme for schools and hard-to-reach groups,” she said.

“We also offer weekly guided walks and monthly talks.

“We truly feel we are at the heart of the community, run by the community, for the community.”
