Harrogate man arrives in Uruguay as part of race around the world A Harrogate man and his team have arrived in Uruguay as part of their 40,000-nautical mile yacht race around the world. 53-year-old Sean McPartland from Birstwith is currently taking on the ‘Clipper Round The World Race’ on a 70-foot ocean racing yacht. And his team, 'Dare to Lead', arrived at Yacht Club Punta del Este in Uruguay yesterday (Thursday) in fourth place. The journey to South America is the first leg of eight legs they'll be taking on after leaving Portsmouth last month. And after arriving on land, Sean has posted updates and photos on social media, including photos with ‘Bertie the Birstwith Bear’ - the mascot presented to him by pupils at Birstwith CE Primary School. The route is divided into eight legs and between 13 and 16 individual races including six ocean crossings. Sean wrote on his blog yesterday after completing leg one:
"We have been through one hell of a storm. Our Additional Qualified Person (AQP) Charlie said that has been the worst weather he has ever experienced and, although he is only 23, he has 19 years sailing experience including many professional ocean races!"The crew is battered, bruised and very cold. We just want to get to dry land and have a beer.
"Fourth place is a great result though and good reward for all our hard work."
You can track Sean's progress here. Sean is also fundraising for Unicef and his JustGiving page can be found here.
