Harrogate karate club bag 16 medals at European championships

Harrogate Shotokan Karate Club at the JKS European Karate Championships.

Harrogate Shotokan Karate Club has returned from the JKS European Karate Championships in Copenhagen with an impressive haul of 16 medals.

A squad of 17 members from the club, which is based at Harrogate High School, travelled to Denmark to take part in the competition, which drew more than 1,700 entries from across Europe.

The JKS England team was led by Harrogate Chief Instructor Matt Price, a former World Karate Champion, alongside coach Tom Little. Collectively, Harrogate’s competitors achieved seven golds, six silvers and three bronzes.

Among the standout performances was 10-year-old Jonty Price, who secured four gold medals.

He won both the Kumite and Kata divisions in his age group to take the title of Individual Grand Champion, and added further golds in the Family Team Kata and Male Team Kumite events.

Other gold medal winners included Alexandra Ivanics in Female Kata, Helen Thornham in Female Kumite, and Luciano Zanuni in Male Kumite.

Silver medals went to competitors including Zoe Price in Koten Kata, Zarana Gilthorpe in Female Team Kata, and Kate Hambleton in Female Team Kumite.

Bronze medals were collected by Eilidh Owens, Oliver Ulanski and Anthony Halsall.
