Ripon optometrist debunks contact lens myths

Specsavers have shared expert advice to dispel common contact lens myths.

Many glasses wearers find the idea of contact lenses daunting – from the fear of poking themselves in the eye to forgetting to remove them.

However, a local Specsavers optometrist has shared expert advice to dispel common contact lens myths, aiming to give prescription holders peace of mind, freedom and confidence to choose a visual aid that suits their lifestyle.

Katherine Friis, the optometrist director at Specsavers Ripon, has shared her answers to some of the most common questions she’s encountered during appointments in the hope of debunking some common misconceptions when it comes to contact lenses.

  • They’re hard to put in - It's true, it takes a bit of practice, but it doesn't take long to get the hang of it. The more you practise, the easier it’ll get in no time – and no, you’re not touching your eye per se; you only need to touch your eyelid when you put them in
  • I'm too young to wear contact lenses - there's no 'official' age to start wearing them. If you and your optician are happy that you’re comfortable putting them in, taking them out, and cleaning them, then there’s really nothing stopping you
  • I’ve got an astigmatism – no worries, there’s a lens out there for you – a toric lens – these are specially designed to correct astigmatisms – a consultation is needed to find one that feels right for you
  • Or am I too old? Contacts have come a long way and can be customised for many prescriptions – including bifocal and varifocal. Even though our eyes may become dry with age, along with other conditions, adjustments can be made to ensure you stay as comfortable as possible
  • Will it go behind my eye? I can understand how that’s a terrifying thought, but no, it’s anatomically impossible for that to happen. One might get dislodged from its original position, but that can be easily put back into place using your finger, so you don’t have to worry about one vanishing
  • Can I wear them when playing sports? Yes, most daily lenses are suitable for your favourite activities, and you don’t have to worry about them slipping off your nose or getting in the way like you would with a pair of glasses

She added:

"I really hope these tips help those interested in introducing lenses into their lives or those who haven’t been able to get on with them previously. Contact lenses have come a long way, and different options are now available to ensure they’re comfortable – you wouldn’t even know you’re wearing a pair.

"Plus, they’re a really simple addition to any morning routine - no more time-consuming or difficult than brushing your teeth or applying SPF. Additionally, depending on the type you choose, you don’t even need to clean them or accidentally misplace them; just throw them away once you’ve worn them – simple.

"We’ve seen how lenses can truly improve people’s lives by giving them the freedom to enjoy their favourite sports again or simply boost their confidence. At Specsavers, our team are happy to sit down with you, chat about your options, and even do a test run. We'll show you how to put them in and take them out, go over helpful tips, and answer any questions - making sure you're comfortable and confident with your new look."
