WATCH: Harrogate runners pay tribute to 'unsung hero' who inspired community group

A Harrogate community running group have paid tribute to the woman who inspired them after she was named the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 'Unsung Hero' for 2021.

A Harrogate community running group have paid tribute to the woman who inspired them after she was named the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 'Unsung Hero' for 2021. Sam Barlow was nominated by the Fitmums & Friends group she set up in Hull, launched in 2009 to bring women together and to get active. And after she was named 'unsung hero' at the BBC's awards ceremony, Harrogate's own 'Fitmums & Friends' have sent her a video of congratulations. "We are incredibly proud of Sam and what she has achieved and wanted to celebrate her achievement at our running session by sending her a congratulations video!
"Fitmums & friends in Harrogate is run by volunteers and follows Sam's incredible messages of inclusion and hope."
Sam was selected by a panel of experts from 15 winners of local awards from across the UK. In reply to the Harrogate Fitmums video, Sam said:
"Thank you so very much what a lovely thing to do. Keep up the fab work in Harrogate. "Really hope I can visit soon. Thank you again so much you lovely lot!"

The group, which is open to both men and women over 16, then walk or run a route ranging between 1 and 4 miles. Fitmums is run by volunteers with the aim of providing a "safe environment" for mums and others to get together and get active as a community.
