Town boss says 'trust' is key if fans are to be allowed alcohol at matches

Harrogate Town boss Simon Weaver has backed the idea of loosening alcohol rules at lower league football matches - if fans behave sensibly.

Harrogate Town boss Simon Weaver has backed the idea of loosening alcohol rules at lower league football matches - as long as fans behave sensibly. A fan-led review into football governance has called for alcohol to be sold in sight of the pitch at matches in the National League and League Two. Comparing alcohol rules in football to that in rugby grounds, the review suggests that football clubs are losing out on roughly £2 per head. It is projected that for a League Two average attendance of 4,000 across 23 home matches, that approximately £184,000 is being lost per club - or £4,416,000 across the whole division. And Town boss Simon Weaver believes loosening rules and allowing alcohol could be a positive move. He said:

"It could be a good thing for a number of reasons - the revenue for lower league clubs for one - but only as long as people have the proper behaviour and the correct amount. "Of course you'll get the minority sometimes having too many but stewards will have to be aware of that and act accordingly."
And the Town boss believes that, should rules be loosened, there should be a trust between clubs and fans for them to behave sensibly. He added:
"I think there should be trust as well. For anyone who goes against that trust, there has to be rules and regulations in place."
Simon will be taking his side to Swindon Town on Saturday for their first away trip at The County Ground. And despite The Robins' good run of form, the Town boss will not be fearing the opposition. He said:
"We shouldn't be afraid of anyone. They're up there and have got a good recent record, especially away from home. "But we're delving into the analysis of their games at home and expect our team to come out with a positive performance. "As much as we want to be gritty on the ball, we need to be the same off the ball as well."
