Town boss expects major absences with squad depleted by illness and injury

Harrogate Town boss Simon Weaver has a depleted squad for this weekend after admitting the club is in its worst injury crisis in seven years.

Harrogate Town Manager Simon Weaver faces lining up with a depleted squad this weekend after admitting the club is in its worst injury crisis in seven years. The manager is expecting to be without several players ahead of the club's League Two trip to Walsall on Saturday due to both injury and illness. Despite admitting youth players will need to step up into the first team, Simon is expecting them to be ready for the challenge. He said:

"We’re going to be depleted on Saturday. We haven’t had as many injuries and illness as this for about seven years, so it’s a tough one.

"Saturday is a time when we might have to have a large portion of the youth team on the subs bench and they might have to come on.

"This is the acid test if your squad can dig in and play other positions. Only on Saturday morning can we pick the team as there’s illness in the camp as well."

Simon is expecting another difficult fixture for his team as they look to bounce back from a 4-0 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday. The two played out a 2-2 draw when Walsall came to Harrogate last September, followed by a 0-0 stalemate in April at Banks's Stadium. He said:

"It was a tough one last year and will be again this year because they’re on a run, they’ve got great experience in the team and are a good footballing team.

"Positionally if we’re not organised they’ll pop it round us and make life difficult.

"If we can get the likes of Luke Armstrong back on Saturday, that in itself lifts the team.

"Attacking-wise we went to Sheffield Wednesday and cut them open eight or nine times, so if we can do it there we’re confident we can do it on Saturday and try and outscore them, but at the same time try and develop defensively."
