Being a vegan carries many misconceptions, however the thought of vegans only eating twigs and grass are slowly going away, with many of us opting for a more plant-based diet for it’s numerous health benefits as well as environmental impact.

A staggering 400,000 people took part in Veganuary’s 2020 campaign with many planning to continue with their plant-based diets beyond January.

Why not step out of your comfort zone this Veganuary and try something new, these 5 quirky and unconventional vegan recipes are here to prove that plant-based doesn’t have to be boring!

1. Banana Peel Pulled Pork

Banana peel as a substitute for pulled pork? Yeah right!

Sounds ludicrous, however Great British Bake off winner Nadiya Hussain claims that as an ingenious way to avoid food waste she combines her left over banana peels with garlic, onion and other ingredients to create a vegan no-waste version of pulled pork or chicken.

2. Watermelon Smoked Ham

As vegan meat alternatives continue to fill the shelves of the UK supermarkets, the Americans decided to take it one step further by turning a watermelon into a smoked ham.

New York chef Will Horowitz unveiled his watermelon ham back in 2018, the fruit is marinated for four days in a combination of herbs, salt and ash before smoking it for eight long hours.

Could this fruity alternative replace the beef on your next Sunday roast?

3. Carrot Bacon

Finding it’s fame through the social media app Tik-Tok, carrot bacon is a healthy alternative to the real deal and is super simple to make.

In a video which now has over 12.5 million views, the recipe involves a peeler, a carrot and just a few other ingredients.

If you’re a bacon lover who wants to add more vegetables into their diet, give this one a go!

4. Vegan Calamari

Not all vegan recipes are always healthy, these deep fried rings of oyster mushroom are supposedly meant to mimic the taste of squid by using dried seaweed as a seasoning.

If you’re longing for that seaside, summer holiday feeling; maybe this recipe will transport you to that ocean view.

5. Tofu Scramble

This one is a fan favourite amongst the vegan community but involves quite a controversial ingredient.

To imitate that familiar ‘eggy’ taste, the recipe calls for black salt: an Indian salt with a sulphuric component to it.

The taste is remarkably similar to the real thing; just try not to let the potent smell put you off!
