With Storm Christoph set to bring major disruption to roads in the Harrogate district, motorists are again finding themselves having to navigate through some difficult conditions on essential journeys. From what condition you car should be in to what to avoid on the roads, we take a look at some top tips to drive safely on any essential journeys. Always allow extra time for your journey and respect any road closure signs - do NOT drive through flood water! When driving in heavy rain, always: Turn your headlights on Keep a safe distance behind other cars (stopping distances can be double compared to dry weather!) Ensure your windscreen wipers are in good working condition Aquaplaning and standing water 'Aquaplaning' happens when the water on the road forms a cushion between the road surface and your tyres, causing you to lose control and your car to skid. To avoid this, try to keep low speeds on wet roads and avoid heavy braking. Avoid driving through standing water if possible and do NOT drive through flood water - fast-moving water is very powerful, take care or your car could be swept away!
