New exhibition opens to mark 200 years of Harrogate's first hospital

The new "Health in Harrogate" exhibition is now open.

A new exhibition exploring Harrogate's history of health and wellbeing has opened to mark 200 years since the town welcomed patients to its first hospital.

The ribbon was cut by Harrogate Mayor Councillor Chris Aldred on Tuesday (7th April), officially launching the display at the West Park Centre.

Titled “Health in Harrogate: From the First Hospital to the Future”, the exhibition charts the town’s medical history from Victorian and Edwardian practices through to modern healthcare.

It coincides with the bicentenary of the Royal Bath Hospital, which first opened on 6 April 1826.

Councillor Chris Aldred told Your Harrogate:

"I would urge people to come along and see what’s on offer - health is a very important part of a town.

"Harrogate was a destination for health and it’s no coincidence for the Town of Culture bid that we’ve submitted, our themes are water, wellness and welcome, so it all ties in."

Harrogate’s reputation as a centre for healing dates back more than 450 years, with visitors drawn to its 88 mineral springs in the belief they could treat a wide range of conditions.

Historically, patients were prescribed specific waters in a similar way to modern medicine, despite their often strong smells and high mineral content.

The exhibition features photographs, illustrations, talks and family activities, and will run until 16 May. It has been organised in collaboration with groups including Harrogate Medical Society, Harrogate Civic Society and Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust.

As part of the programme, Dr Jed Atkinson from the Royal Pump Room Museum will deliver a talk on 18th April, examining the links between earth sciences and social history, including the role of Harrogate’s mineral springs.

Additional displays will be held at the Royal Pump Room Museum and Harrogate Library, alongside guided tours exploring the town’s spa heritage.

The original Royal Spa Hospital, once located on Cornwall Road near Valley Gardens, closed in 1994.

Healthcare in the town is now provided by Harrogate District Hospital.
