A pioneering group of Harrogate children have launched a campaign to reduce food waste and highlight the importance of sustainability.
Pupils at The Imagine Club at Ashville Prep School hope ‘The Journey of the Carrot’ will promote the global problem of food wastage alongside the plight of hunger and importance of agriculture in the developing world.
The children, led by teacher Julie Bourgeois, started their innovative campaign by learning about the Green School in Indonesia, an award-winning bamboo campus nestled in the jungles of Bali.
The school has won global recognition for its commitment to sustainability and serves as a hub for innovation, experimentation, and worldwide solutions to food management.
This prompted the pupils to take a look closer to home and think about their local environment, including their school meals.
She said:
“We know food wastage is a global issue, and the children began to think about how they could reduce own food waste to try to make a difference.
“It inspired them to reflect on the journey of food, from farm to fork, and the significant energy required to produce something as simple as a carrot – and The Journey of the Carrot campaign was launched.”
The children have presented their plans to reduce food waste to school leaders and produced a video outlining potential solutions encouraging everyone to think about the problem.
They hope to reduce food waste by talking about how much food they need and monitor any reductions they can make.
Head of Prep Phil Soutar said their desire to promote sustainability was inspirational at such a young age:
“They hope this initiative will conserve energy and resources, fostering a culture of sustainability at Ashville.
“The children in Imagine Club are very proud of the work they have done, the deep and meaningful conversations which have taken place, the community they have worked with and the ideas they have shared.”
