Fountains Abbey given £1.4million grant to prevent River Skell flooding

Fountains Abbey have been given a £1.4million grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to go towards preventing flooding of the River Skell.

The Skell Valley Project aims to use nature-based solutions to reduce flooding of the river valley caused by climate change, which could cause "irreparable damage" to Fountains Abbey if no action is taken. But the substantial grant will allow the four-year project to go ahead and save one of the area's most historic landmarks. https://www.facebook.com/fountainsabbey/posts/3794212520624888 Fountains Abbey made the announcement via Facebook, adding their gratitude to the community for their help with the scheme:
"Thank you to all the farmers, landowners and communities who have worked with us to make sure that the Scheme reflected the views and needs of a wide range of people living and working here in the Skell Valley."
The Skell Valley Scheme aims to rejuvenate 12 miles of the River Skell after several instances in recent years when the 12th-century ruins and water garden have been affected by water. The aim of the project is to improve the landscape’s resilience to climate change, boost the local economy and increase people’s access to green space following the pandemic.
