Royal recognition for Ripon community hero

Community hero Pete Wilkinson has been invited to Buckingham Palace.

A Ripon crossing patrol officer who has helped keep families safe for nearly a decade is set to receive royal recognition at a Buckingham Palace garden party.

Pete Wilkinson, a familiar figure to pupils and parents at one of the city’s busiest junctions, has been invited to attend the event on May 6th alongside his wife Estelle.

The invitation recognises his long-standing service to the local community.

Pete, a member of Ripon BID, balances his role as a school crossing patrol officer with running The Easy Learning Shop in the Duck Hill Shopping Quarter.

He will take time away from his regular duties at the junction of Kirkby Road, Blossomgate, Church Lane and Trinity Lane to attend the event in London.

He said:

“I couldn’t believe it when I received a call, completely out of the blue, from the Lord Lieutenant’s office saying that I was being invited to attend on May 6 with my wife Estelle.”

He added:

“Estelle, who owns and runs Lindsay Fashions of Ripon in the Duck Hill Shopping Quarter, has chosen a lovely new outfit for the day — dress, hat, shoes and handbag — and I bought a new suit on Saturday.

"It’s very exciting and we just hope that William and Kate — The Prince and Princess of Wales — are there and that we get a chance to meet with them.”

Pete has served as a crossing patrol officer in Ripon for almost nine years, helping children from nearby schools, including Holy Trinity Primary School, safely cross the road each day.

His contribution was previously recognised in 2024 when he received a St Wilfrid’s Star at Ripon Cathedral for services to the community.

Parents say his presence has become a vital part of daily life.

Linsey, whose children attend Holy Trinity Primary School, said:

“Everybody knows Pete – he’s such a lovely man who does a fantastic job in keeping us all safe.

"No matter what weather we face, he is totally reliable and there morning and evening to make sure we can cross these busy roads.

"He is a hero and I hope he has a wonderful time at the Royal Garden Party.”

The Buckingham Palace garden parties are held annually, offering an opportunity to recognise individuals from across the UK for their contributions to their communities.
