A newly refurbished village pub near Knaresborough has been named among the best in the UK by the Good Food Guide.
The General Tarleton in Ferrensby has earned a place in the guide’s inaugural list of Britain’s 100 Best Pubs, published on 28th October.
The list celebrates pubs across the country that combine character, quality and comfort, showcasing establishments that offer exceptional real ales, warm hospitality and accomplished cooking.
Supported by Timothy Taylor’s Landlord, the campaign highlights venues at the forefront of Britain’s modern dining scene.
The General Tarleton was recognised for its impressive transformation under the direction of Yorkshire chef Tommy Banks.
On the venue, the Guide reads:
"The General Tarleton is the first restoration in Banks’ new group, Jeopardy Hospitality, and good money has gone into the smart makeover.
"The homely bar with old-style oak tables and Windsor chairs is dedicated to drinkers, while the sunlit atrium is a fresh, modern space filled with light ash tables."
The Guide is also full of praise for the food on offer at the new-look General Tarleton.
It reads:
"The tight menu is packed with pub classics: oozing Scotch eggs and twice-baked cheese soufflé to start, then pork schnitzel with a fried egg or fillet steak with fabulous triple-cooked chips.
"There are Dexter beef burgers and handsome pies too, laced with Black Sheep ale and served with 'baked potato' mash. Dishes are refined and carefully executed, as in a snow-white fillet of cod with deep-fried cockles and a roast onion or a chocolate pot with sour cherry, miso and almond.
The General Tarleton joins other acclaimed pubs on the list, including the Highland Laddie in Leeds, the Eagle in London and the Applecross Inn in the Scottish Highlands, in celebrating the enduring appeal of the great British pub.
Other North Yorkshire venues include The Abbey Inn, The Star Inn and The Owl Hawnby.
