New road signs warn of wildfire risk across North Yorkshire

New roadside warning signs are being installed across North Yorkshire to remind people of the dangers of lighting campfires and disposable barbecues in the countryside.

The signs form part of the Don't Spark Disaster campaign, launched following last year's devastating Fylingdales Moor wildfire, which burned across 20 square kilometres and caused extensive damage to wildlife, farmland and the environment.

The campaign comes amid continued reports of campfires being lit in remote woodland and moorland areas, raising fears of another major wildfire during the current dry spell.

North Yorkshire Council leader Cllr Carl Les said:

"Despite last year's major incident at Fylingdales Moor, we continue to get reports of campfires being lit and left smouldering.

"These new roadside warning signs provide a clear reminder that fires, barbecues and other open flames have no place in our countryside."

The campaign also urges people not to discard cigarettes or leave glass bottles behind, as both can contribute to wildfires.

Visitors are still being encouraged to enjoy North Yorkshire's countryside, but are advised to bring prepared picnics rather than cooking outdoors.

The Don't Spark Disaster campaign is led by the North York Moors National Park Authority in partnership with North Yorkshire Council, the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, Forestry England and North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service.
