Following a day of traffic chaos around the Wetherby area, police are appealing for witnesses following a serious collision on the A1(M).
The incident occurred this morning (Friday 19th September) and resulted in a section of the motorway being closed for several hours.
Shortly before 10:05am this morning (Friday 19th September), on the Northbound carriageway between Junction 45 at Boston Spa and 46 at Wetherby Services, a black Mercedes C250 collided with a black Volvo XC60 that was stationary on the hard shoulder and resulted in a woman suffering life-threatening injuries.
The impact of the collision caused both vehicles to come to rest in the middle of the carriageway and initially fully closed the motorway, with Northbound section remaining shut until 6:30pm.
The driver of the Volvo, a woman aged in her 50s, was taken to hospital to be treated for life-threatening injuries and the male driver of the Mercedes, has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
Officers from the Major Collision Enquiry Team (MCET) are appealing for witnesses to the collision, or anyone who may have video footage of it or the circumstances leading up to it, to contact West Yorkshire Police by calling 101 or go online quoting reference 13250538604.
