Newly released data shows that more than 200 cyclists were injured in road traffic collisions across North Yorkshire during the past year.
Figures obtained by Advice.co.uk reveal that North Yorkshire Police recorded 237 cyclist casualties in the 2024/25 reporting period.
North Yorkshire Police categorise cycling injuries as slight, serious or fatal.
In 2024/25, officers recorded two fatalities, 48 serious injuries and 187 slight injuries involving cyclists.
These figures align with national trends. Department for Transport data shows that from 2019 to 2023, an average of two cyclists were killed and 80 seriously injured every week on Britain’s roads.
In 2023, 87 cyclists died, with thousands more sustaining serious or minor injuries.
JF Law’s Road Traffic Accident Manager, Tracy Chick, said:
“It is deeply concerning that cyclist injury numbers remain so high. Many of these crashes could be prevented, as they are too often linked to driver inattention, poor road conditions, and a lack of safe, well-designed cycling routes.
“The consequences can be devastating. Cyclists may suffer broken bones, head injuries, long-term psychological trauma, and financial strain following an incident.”
Poor road surfaces, including potholes, broken tarmac and uneven rural routes, combined with limited cycling infrastructure, continue to contribute significantly to cyclist casualties across the UK.
Tracy Chick said:
“As more people take up cycling across the UK, improving road safety and ensuring justice for injured cyclists must remain a national priority. It’s vital that anyone injured in a cycling accident understands their rights and seeks legal advice as soon as possible.
“If the accident was caused by someone else’s negligence, whether that’s a motorist, local authority, or another party, they may be entitled to make a compensation claim to help cover medical costs, loss of earnings, and other related damages.”
