Live Shakespeare returns to Newby Hall next month

Shakespeare is heading back to Newby Hall & Gardens near Ripon.

Live Shakespeare returns to Newby Hall near Ripon this summer, with two contrasting productions of tragedies staged across the estate.

The Victorian Gothic Revival Church of Christ the Consoler will host a high‑energy, family‑friendly take on Macbeth on Wednesday 5 August, as touring company the HandleBards bring their hilariously chaotic version of Shakespeare’s tragedy to North Yorkshire.

The production is billed as “an evening chock full of mishaps, mayhem and mirth” and runs from 7pm to around 9pm.

Tickets are £20.50 for adults, £13 for under‑21s, and £5 for children aged five and under, with under‑fives admitted free.

For those who prefer their Shakespeare al fresco, the Lord Chamberlain’s Men will perform Othello on Friday 14 August on Newby’s West Lawn.

A powerful story of deception, jealousy and a man who loved not wisely but too well, the play is presented in traditional Elizabethan style with an all‑male cast, period costume, music and dance.

Tickets include access to the gardens from 12pm, with visitors encouraged to bring picnics and chairs. Doors open at 6pm, with the performance beginning at 7pm and finishing at approximately 9.30pm.

Tickets are £20 for adults and £12 for children, with free entry for under‑fours.
