A Knaresborough resident will stand against Nigel Farage in the forthcoming Clacton by-election.
Martin Davies has been confirmed as the Freedom Alliance candidate for the election, which will be held on Thursday 13th August.
He is among a record 34 candidates standing for the vacant parliamentary seat, alongside Reform UK leader Nigel Farage and Count Binface.
Official election documents list Mr Davies as living within the Harrogate and Knaresborough constituency.
Mr Davies is registered with the Electoral Commission as the leader and treasurer of Freedom Alliance, which has its official address in Knaresborough.
According to information supplied by his campaign, he retired two years ago following a 37-year career with Lloyds Banking Group, where he worked with customers and led organisational change programmes.
Mr Davies said he wants to offer Clacton voters “a genuine alternative”.
He said:
“My aim is to give the people of Clacton another serious political choice. Freedom Alliance is primarily a grassroots party.
“I’m not a career politician. I believe politics should be about listening to people, representing them and being accountable to them.
“Clacton deserves a genuine alternative.”
The by-election was triggered after Mr Farage resigned as Clacton’s MP earlier this month before announcing that he would contest the seat again.
His resignation followed scrutiny over financial gifts and support which it was alleged had not been properly declared. Mr Farage has denied wrongdoing and said he has not broken any rules.
Freedom Alliance says one of its policies would link an MP’s basic salary to the average earnings of people living in the constituency they represent.
Legitimate expenses and payments for additional responsibilities would remain separate under the proposal.
Mr Davies said:
“If MPs are elected to represent ordinary people, there should be a meaningful connection between what their constituents earn and what MPs themselves are paid.
“We offer positive politics, done by ordinary people – a real alternative.”
Voting in the Clacton by-election will take place between 7am and 10pm on Thursday 13th August.
