Harrogate Town Council has begun updating signage across the town as part of plans to improve navigation for residents and visitors.
The project will see existing signs refreshed and new "Welcome to Harrogate" signs introduced at key entry points to the town.
According to the Town Council, the initiative follows concerns that some signage and visitor information had become outdated following local government reorganisation, when Harrogate Borough Council was replaced by North Yorkshire Council in 2023.
The first phase of the project includes updating the town information signs, often known as "tombstones", along with directional signs on the former Tourist Information Office to point visitors towards the Royal Pump Room Museum and the West Park Centre.
Future phases will include new gateway signs welcoming people into Harrogate, with the council working alongside organisations including Harrogate BID, Harrogate Civic Society, Harrogate Chamber of Commerce and the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority.
Councillor Mark Warr, Chair of the Town Council's Signage Working Group, said:
"We identified soon after our formation in 2025 that signage and information around town had been ignored for several years.
"Residents regularly commented about the poor state of the Harrogate boundary signs and the lack of formal welcome signage on the roads into Harrogate.
"Working with key Harrogate partners including BID, the Civic Society and the Chamber of Commerce as well as the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority has allowed us to progress with a plan.
"This is now underway and although funding for a complete update will not be in place for a year or so, we are keen to make a difference with the funds available as soon as possible."
The new signs will incorporate the Town Council's "Crown of Springs" icon, which forms part of its branding for the town.
Harrogate and Knaresborough MP Tom Gordon welcomed the scheme.
He said:
"North Yorkshire Council's neglect of the signage has damaged Harrogate tourism offering. Nothing was updated when the Tourist Information Centre closed, the signs sent people on a goose chase.
"It's great to see the Town Council taking initiative. Signage is a small step that can make a big impact on the feel of the area."
