Harrogate charity sets £10,000 target for Nepal flood victims

A Harrogate charity has launched an appeal to support communities affected by devastating floods in Nepal.

Harrogate Brigantes Rotary hopes to beat the £10,000 it raised following the country’s earthquake in 2015.

Donations of up to £7,500 will be match-funded thanks to a legacy left by a friend of the Rotary club.

The group has a longstanding connection with Nepal through its Changing Young Lives in Nepal project and works alongside the Himalayan Gurkhas Rotary Club in Kathmandu.

Harrogate Brigantes President Guy Wilson said:

“We’re sure, like us, you will have been shocked and saddened by the terrible scenes coming out of Nepal.

“Our thoughts are with everyone who has lost their life, loved ones, home or livelihood, as well as those who are just waiting for news.”

Several members of Harrogate Brigantes have visited Nepal as volunteers, including Mr Wilson.

One of the charity’s key contacts is Major Lil Gurung MBE, who was previously stationed with the Gurkhas at Catterick.

The Rotary club has also previously welcomed 40 Nepalese children to Harrogate to perform at its Kids Aloud concert at the Royal Hall.

Brigantes Rotarian and appeal co-organiser Charlotte Gale said the £10,000 raised in 2015 was distributed by the Himalayan Gurkhas Rotary Club.

She said:

“They travelled the length and breadth of Nepal to make sure every penny was spent where it was needed most.

“The Himalayan Gurkhas have once again reached out to Harrogate Brigantes to ask for our support and we are committed to doing everything in our power to assist them as Nepal recovers from the recent catastrophic floods.”
