Harrogate-based bus firm Transdev will compete in a national awards final after its multi-million pound investment in electric technology impressed judges.
Celebrating excellence across the bus industry since 2005, the 18th Routeone Awards recognises operators and individuals who have driven innovation and success.
Transdev is among 81 finalists across 15 categories to compete at this year’s awards finals in Birmingham this November – with each demonstrating innovative use of technology and outstanding customer service.
The firm, which operates The Harrogate Bus Company, announced orders worth £21 million for a completely new fleet of all-electric double and single deck buses, plus re-equipping its Harrogate depot to fully electric power, in August 2023.
This was followed two months later by a further £7.5 million order for 15 new electric single deck buses to convert one of its most popular routes, the Shuttle linking Keighley and Bradford in West Yorkshire, to zero emission operation.
Parent firm Transdev Blazefield’s Managing Director Henri Rohard said:
“We are proud to be shortlisted for the Environment Award, especially in the year when the transition to electric buses is so important for our industry.
“We will continue to be proactive in reducing our carbon footprint, and by actively pursuing development and growth for our local communities.
"All our steps in that direction are important – for example, 80 percent of the components in both of our new electric bus designs are produced in the UK or in Europe.
“This new generation of buses and charging systems has taken us three years to develop, following a successful application for £11 million through ZEBRA, the Government’s Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas fund, and supported by our two exceptional partners, North Yorkshire Council and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, to make these exciting projects a reality.”
The first new Alexander Dennis 400EV electric double deck bus for Transdev’s flagship 36 route linking Harrogate and Ripon with Leeds was unveiled at a family fun party in June in front of landmark luxury Harrogate hotel The Yorkshire.
A Mercedes-Benz eCitaro demonstrator vehicle was also on show to give VIPs and families a preview of a further 20 all-new, zero emission electric single deck buses which will also usher in a new era of comfort and style.
To be considered for a Routeone Award, candidates were first nominated by industry peers – with nominees then submitting detailed entries demonstrating how they meet and beat the high standards set for success.
The judging process involved a panel of recognised industry experts, who reviewed each entry to create a shortlist that reflects the highest levels of excellence.
Routeone Awards Event Director Helen Conway said:
“The Routeone Awards stand as a beacon of recognition in the bus and coach industry. Each year, the calibre of entries surpasses expectations, reflecting the dynamic nature of the industry.
“The finalists announced today represent the very best, and it is an honour to recognise their achievements.”
