Specsavers stores in Harrogate and Ripon have launched a new clinical service designed to help people suffering from dry eyes.
The opticians are now offering ZEST (Zocular Eyelid System Technology), a procedure carried out in-store by a trained clinician that aims to improve the symptoms of dry eye.
The non-invasive treatment takes around 10 to 20 minutes and uses a natural, okra-based gel alongside a specialised swab to deep-clean the eyelids and eyelashes.
According to Specsavers, the procedure removes biofilm, debris and mites that can block the oil glands in the eyelids, helping to relieve symptoms and improve eye comfort.
Dry eye is a common condition that can cause sore, irritated or itchy eyes, redness, watery eyes and blurred vision. It is becoming increasingly common due to factors including increased screen time, air conditioning, central heating and ageing.
Caroline Sullivan, Optician Director at Specsavers Harrogate, said:
"Many people assume dry eyes are simply something they must live with, but untreated dry eye can significantly impact quality of life, comfort and even vision.
"Symptoms can sometimes worsen over time if the underlying cause is not addressed properly.
"Seeing an optometrist or contact lens optician is important because they can assess the health of the eye and eyelids, identify the root cause of the dry eyes problem and recommend the most appropriate procedure plan.
"In some cases, symptoms of dry eye can also overlap with other eye conditions, so a professional assessment helps ensure patients receive the correct care and advice.
"Many customers say that after procedures like ZEST, it feels similar to the difference you notice when you clean your glasses – everything becomes clearer, more comfortable, and easier to focus on. It's a simple step that can have a big impact on how you see and feel."
Patients will receive an assessment before treatment to determine whether ZEST is suitable for them.

"It is also important to highlight that while many patients notice significant improvement after one session, dry eye is often a chronic condition, so ongoing management and at-home care may still be recommended to maintain results."
The new service is now available at Specsavers stores in both Harrogate and Ripon.
