An 80-year-old grandmother from Hampsthwaite has completed a wingwalk, raising £820 for a sight loss charity.
Janet Mills took to the skies above Leeds East Airport to support the Macular Society after being diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration nine years ago.
The grandmother of eight was nicknamed “Mad Nanna” by one of her grandchildren ahead of the challenge.
Janet said:
“I wasn't at all worried, I was so excited actually.
“Everyone else was petrified for me and one of my grandchildren called me Mad Nanna, which made me feel even better actually.
“I have eight grandchildren who were doing much of the screaming on the day but I could hear my daughter's scream too!”
Janet is no stranger to adventure, having travelled to South-East Asia, South America, China and Australia.
Janet said:
“In our 60s and into our late 70s we classed ourselves as the ‘wrinkliest backpackers in town!’”
The money raised will help the Macular Society fund research into macular disease and provide support for people affected by sight loss, including local groups across Yorkshire.
Janet said:
“Getting £820 was something I never imagined.
“I’ve thanked so many people and they’re just as overjoyed, even they think I’m mad, and I’m definitely up for doing something next year as well.”
Janet receives hospital injections to help manage her eye condition. Her sight has gradually deteriorated, making reading more difficult, and she stopped driving two years ago.
But she remains positive and continues to get out and about with her partner.
Janet said:
“I'm just going to go with the flow because what more can I do? I have tools to help me read, I have the injections and I’m happy how I am.”
She added:
“I think eventually we’ll find a cure.”
