Harrogate's hospitality sector has enjoyed one of its busiest early-summer periods in years, according to local hotelier Simon Cotton.
The Managing Director of the Fat Badger Group says a blockbuster fortnight of major events has delivered a huge boost for hotels, bars, restaurants and attractions across the town.
The Great Yorkshire Show, Home & Gift Fair at the Harrogate Convention Centre and the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival have all taken place in quick succession, creating what Simon describes as one of the strongest trading periods the town has seen for years.
He said:
"The last two weeks in Harrogate have been nothing short of a hospitality masterclass, with the town's hotels, bars, restaurants and attractions all enjoying a surge in trade thanks to a trio of major events landing back-to-back."
Simon said hotels across Harrogate reported consistently high occupancy, with many fully booked for several nights as visitors flocked to the town.
He described the Great Yorkshire Show as "the undisputed heavyweight" of Harrogate's events calendar.
He said:
"Its pull is extraordinary; farmers, families, exhibitors and day-trippers all descending on the town in their thousands.
"For hotels, it's the perfect storm of high demand and long stays."
Following the show, Home & Gift brought thousands of buyers and exhibitors to the town, before the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival attracted authors and crime fiction fans from across the UK.
Simon praised the organisers of the literary festival, saying:
"The HIF team should be congratulated on putting on another world-class event which was superb in all aspects."
He added:
"I was lucky enough to attend the opening night and saw first hand the amazing line-up, professional set-up, but I also got to speak to a wide variety of attendees who had nothing but high praise for Harrogate as a destination."
Simon believes the timing of the three events has been key to their success, creating sustained footfall rather than short-lived peaks in visitor numbers.
He said:
"What's most encouraging is how these events overlap to create a compound effect. Instead of isolated peaks, Harrogate has enjoyed a sustained period of high footfall, strong spending and vibrant atmosphere.
"The literal back-to-back running of these three events couldn't have worked better and I hope this can be repeated in future years."
He also said the recent spell of warm weather had played its part, with visitors making the most of Harrogate's outdoor hospitality offering.
Looking ahead, Simon says the town's success demonstrates the importance of its major events to the wider local economy.
He said:
"When the Convention Centre is busy, when the Showground is thriving, when festivals are firing on all cylinders, the whole town benefits."
Reflecting on the past fortnight, Simon added:
"If the last fortnight has shown anything, it's that Harrogate hospitality is resilient, adaptable and ready to shine when the town is buzzing.
"And right now, Harrogate is buzzing louder than it has in a long time."
