A beautiful 10-minute animated documentary from local Knaresborough-based filmmakers David Bunting and James McKay and winner of Best Eco Film at the International Animation Film Festival 2025 in Bulgaria. This Harrogate premiere explores how people could live well within our planet’s limits – based on groundbreaking research from academic in Leeds and imagined through stunning poetic animation.

Award-winning filmmaker Damon Gameau (That Sugar Film) embarks on a hopeful journey to reimagine our future and dares to ask: what would happen if we embraced the best climate solutions already available and scaled them up – fast? Structured as a visual letter to his young daughter, 2040 blends documentary with dramatised sequences and dazzling effects to offer a powerful, optimistic vision of what’s possible. A visually rich feature-length film blending documentary, storytelling, real-life solutions and cinematic magic shows what a healthier, fairer world could look like for the next generation.
