Superheroes land in Harrogate for national Meals on Wheels week

A host of local superheroes have been helping deliver food to the elderly in Harrogate to mark national Meals on Wheels week.

A host of local superheroes have been helping deliver food to the elderly in Harrogate to mark national Meals on Wheels week. Spirit of Harrogate staff were among those to ditch their day job and answer the call of Harrogate Neighbours - a not-for-profit care organisation. The volunteers have been delivering fresh, hot, home-cooked meals to those most in need in the community. George Black, Brand Executive at Spirit of Harrogate said:

“As a company we have been volunteering for Harrogate & Ripon Food Angels for over a year. We think the support they provide to older people living in our community is incredible and a much-needed service in the area. “Dressing up as a superhero and delivering the meals during National Meals on Wheels Week was such fun, but the truth is, all the volunteers and the team behind the Harrogate & Ripon Food Angels are the true superheroes.”
Prior to the pandemic, it was reported that 3 million people in the UK have been affected by malnutrition in some way - with 1.3 million of those people aged over 65. There are now over 5 million adults experiencing food insecurity. The Harrogate and Ripon Food Angels prepare and deliver 900 hot, home-cooked meals a week to communities in Harrogate, Ripon and Boroughbridge. The angels will soon be landing in Spofforth and Follifoot where there is now a demand for the service. Speaking on behalf of Harrogate Neighbours, Sue Cawthray, CEO said:
“Although the campaign this year is cantered around ‘superheroes’, the true superheroes are our team of regular volunteers who deliver meals daily into the community. We could not provide the service we offer without them – they are the true unsung heroes. “Our service is an essential lifeline for so many people, so it is important that we continue to raise the profile of the Harrogate & Ripon Food Angels, particularly during National Meals on Wheels Week so we can support those who would benefit so much from the service we provide. “As well as the CEO of Harrogate Neighbours, I am also the National Chair at the National Association of Care Catering (NACC) which hosts the annual National Meals on Wheels awareness week. We are so grateful for the support we have had this year from businesses who have dedicated their time to help raise the profile of a service which has never been more pertinent to support the elderly in the community.”
All volunteers/superheroes followed strict government guidelines and protocol, this includes wearing full PPE to protect themselves and others around them throughout the week.
