Stray Bonfire return given green light by council

The annual Stray Bonfire will go ahead as planned next month following approval from Harrogate Borough Council.

The annual Stray Bonfire will go ahead as planned next month following approval from Harrogate Borough Council. Organisers Harrogate Round Table will be hosting the event on Saturday 6th November. And the event, which is free to attend, will be fundraising for chosen charity Friends of Harrogate Hospital.

John Carter from Harrogate Roundtable told Your Harrogate:

"Obviously it’s unusual times and we had to cancel the bonfire last year, but we’re all systems go for this year."

The event will kick off at 6pm on Saturday 6th November with hosts Your Harrogate's Nick Hancock and Will Smith. The bonfire will be lit at 6:30pm before the fireworks at 7pm. John added:

"Harrogate Round Table puts on the bonfire and it does cost a few thousand pounds, but once we’ve covered those expenses, every penny raised will go to charity and this year we’ve chosen the Friends of Harrogate Hospital.

"We’re hopeful that it's a charity the Harrogate public will be keen to support after the great work that Harrogate Hospital has done over the past 18 months."

For nearly 50 years Harrogate Round Table has organised the Charity Bonfire and Fireworks on the Stray, and they need the help of the Harrogate community to make this year's event happen. The group's members, supporters, friends, and family volunteer their time planning, setting up, managing, and tidying up the event every year. However, there are unavoidable costs of around £8,000 including the fireworks themselves, road traffic management and first aid provision. Once these costs have been covered, the event can take place and any surplus funds raised will go to Friends of Harrogate Hospital.
