International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival returning to Royal Hall in August

The International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival is returning to Harrogate's Royal Hall this August after being cancelled last year.

The International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival is returning to Harrogate's Royal Hall this August. The 10-day event, which was cancelled in 2020 due to Covid, will open on Sunday 8th and run until Wednesday 18th August. The festival usually attracts thousands of visitors to The Royal Hall including performers, supporters, and Gilbert and Sullivan enthusiasts from around the world. Covid-19 restrictions do mean that the productions have to be adapted this year to ensure the safety of performers, audience members and backstage staff, but the Festival is confident that these necessary changes will not detract from the enjoyment of the performances. Festival Director, Janet Smith said:

"After the horrible year we have all endured, we cannot wait to get back into the theatre. "Our seating plan in the theatre is socially distanced, and only 40% of the usual Royal Hall seats are available, so we expect tickets to sell out quickly. "We will have to wait to hear the Government announcements about easing restrictions on 21sr June, when hopefully we will be allowed to open up more seats."

This year, the acclaimed National G&S Opera Company are on board and will kick off proceedings with their opening performance of the much-loved HMS Pinafore. Simon Butteriss will direct and star in all-time favourite The Mikado, and the Opera Company will also bring along a brand new production of Patience. Award-winning Charles Court Opera present their production of Iolanthe, Gilbert & Sullivan's sharp satire of power, privilege and parliamentary democracy. Charles Court Opera will also present two performances of their brand new G&S Express.
